Guillaume de Machaut was a medieval French clergyman, poet and composer; maximum representative of the movement known as Ars nova, and considered the most famous composer of the 14th century. Composed before 1365, the Messe de Nostre Dame is the first known polyphonic mass written by a single composer and one of the masterpieces of medieval music and the entire religious repertoire.



5. Santa Maria, Strela do Dia, from the collection Cantigas de Santa Maria.


The Cantigas de Santa María (Canticles of Saint Mary) is a collection of more than 400 songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary and written at the court of Alfonso X. A number of troubadours took part in its creation, including the monarch himself. They are written in Galician-Portuguese, which was the cultured language of Castilian lyric poetry at the time.
